Most walk-in cooler breakdowns don't happen out of nowhere. The equipment usually gives warning signs days or weeks before it fails. Catching those signs early can save you from losing a cooler full of product.
1. The temperature keeps creeping up
If your walk-in normally holds 36–38°F and you start seeing 40°F or higher, something is wrong. It could be a dirty condenser, low refrigerant or a failing fan. Don't wait until it hits 45°F.
2. The unit runs all the time
A healthy system cycles on and off. If the condensing unit never seems to stop, it's working too hard to keep up — and wearing itself out.
3. Ice on the evaporator coil
A light frost is normal. A solid block of ice is not. Heavy ice usually means a defrost or airflow problem.
4. Water on the floor
Puddles under the evaporator usually mean a clogged or frozen drain line. It's a slip hazard and a sanitation issue.
5. The door doesn't seal
Torn gaskets, sagging hinges and broken door closers let warm, humid air in all day. That means higher energy bills, frost and a system that can't keep up.
6. Strange noises
Grinding, squealing or rattling from fans or the compressor usually means a part is wearing out.
7. Your energy bill jumped
A sudden increase in your electric bill without a change in business can point to a refrigeration system struggling to keep up.
